Residue Dolls
Challenged with completing this short film in 10 days using sustainable methods, the theme allowed me to unashamedly employ all the synthetic filmmaking shortcuts at my disposal. Voices and images were generated from recycled reality using AI. And one or two digital puppetry apps rediscovered from the early noughties (along with some sunny days in Peak District) eschewed the need for a stop motion animation studio. The puppets themselves were beautifully crafted from repurposed waste materials by Patrick Amber. Co-directed, produced and written by Paul Evans in collaboration with Prof. Tony Ryan and researchers from the Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures, Residue Dolls was exhibited alongside the puppets at Festival of the Mind 19 – 29 Sept 2024 at Yorkshire Artspace, Persistence Works, Sheffield.

Meet the Invertebrates

The Wild Escape
All the 360° videos, photographs and paintings in this film were created by the children of Ferham Primary School, Rotherham, working with Jon Harrison as part of The Wild Escape workshops at Clifton Park Museum.
The Wild Escape is a major project from Art Fund that looks to engage children with the UK’s natural environment, inviting primary school children aged 7-11 to explore animals in museum collections and create stories imagining a creature’s journey to a future habitat rich in biodiversity.

The Machinery
This three screen video installation expresses the dehumanisation and alienation of the industrial worker - relentlessly subjected to an exhausting cycle of repetition.
The Machinery is a collaborative artwork by Caroline Radcliffe (clog dancer), Sarah Angliss (composer and digital artist) and Jon Harrison (digital film maker).

A short animated film introducing the Rotherham Together Partnership and the Rotherham Plan which brings together a number of local organisations; the Council, local NHS, Rotherham College, South Yorkshire Police, alongside representatives of the private and voluntary sectors, who work together to improve the quality of life in Rotherham.

A fish finds himself in dire straits in this upside-down road movie.
Stopmotion puppet animation with live action from the golden age of Sheffield and Soho (Shoho?) starring Dawn Shadforth as Jayne, cinematography by Gary Wraith, sound composition by Ron Wright (with the voice of Róisín Murphy), edited by Jane Hicks at Reelworks and digitally composited on Flame at Rushes. Penny Withers: Scale
Drawing inspiration from the rock formations of the Peak District, ceramicist Penny Withers has created this body of work through which she experiments with making larger pieces, working with local climbers to find out more about the intricate surface details on rocky outcrops such as Stanage and Curbar Edge.
Part of Making Ways, a programme supported by Sheffield Culture Consortium through Arts Council England to showcase, celebrate and develop the exceptional contemporary visual art produced in the city.

How do teachers encounter research in the wild?
This animation was produced for the Research Mobilities in Primary Literacy Education Project (2022-2024). The project investigated teachers’ experiences of research, the kinds of literacy research that they encounter, and how literacy research moves to, among and around teachers.
This was an open brief to respond to a prepared script by visualising research findings without narration or dialogue.

The Machinery by Caroline Radcliffe & Sarah Angliss
" To anyone interested in the relationship between music and automation, The Machinery is a fascinating work. Devised by women working in the Lancashire mills, the steps of this nineteenth-century ‘heel and toe’ clog dance directly mimic the repetitive sounds and movements of cotton mill machines, Radcliffe and Angliss take it back to its industrial context, as they juxtapose it with found sounds and video fragments."
